Pickleball Meeting Notes from 9/14/16

1.   Website:  Photos needed for all committee members.  Send photos to Joyce.   A "New Content" tab has been recently added to Homepage. Any changes made to the site (additions or edits) will be included so that players will not need to search for updates.

2.   Tournament Committee:   Paul will do an email blast to all players on our e-mail list in order to get Volunteers for next year's tournament.  Players preferred the next tournament to be on Fri, Sat and Sunday.

3.  Next Mtg, Time and Place:    A decision and consensus was to have PB meetings once a month on the 1st Tuesday of each month.   Our next meeting will be on Tues. Oct 4 @ 5:30 pm at Security Federal Bank 238, Richland Ave (corner of Laurens).

4.  Meeting Your Fellow Players: It was suggested by Warren that twice a month we feature 1 male & 1 female player from our active player list. It would be a blind drawing with both individuals being placed on the public portion of our website.

5.   Social Calendar:   Nancy Vermilye  (not in attendance)  suggested a Monthly Potluck Lunch for 9/22, 10/5, 11/16, and 12/7.  We need clarification about whether to bring your own lunch or bring a dish to share.  (Nancy pls confirm these dates).

Additionally, Nancy is planning a PB Social on Fri Nov 4 at 5 PM in rooms 1&2.  There will be  PB demonstration.  Attendees from A-L will bring appetizers and M-Z  will bring a salad.   Nancy said she would be responsible to drinks and paper goods.  Friends and spouses are encouraged to attend.

6.  Feedback from Reps Regarding Current Schedule:  There was discussion about preferences for DIP, Reservations, and Court Designation

Judy and Nelson  (3.0)  Okay with current schedule. They liked 8-10 am Open Play and  10-12 Court Designation .

Doug Lilly:  3.5 players (which he says are mostly night players) were okay with current schedule.

Beverly and Faith (1.5 -2.5 and beginners) prefer DIP mixed and Court Designation

There was consensus to leave Sun schedule as is and to change Saturday to:  9-10 DIP, 10-1pm Court Designation & 1-4:45 CRP.

Tony will redo calendar to reflect these changes and improve the optics of the calendar.

7.  List of Players and their Ratings:   Mo has provided a list of every player. Instead we currently need a full list of 'Active" players with name, email, and respective skill Level.  This list should be "active players".   There was no exact way to determine an active player. However, Sally ( via the Reps) will review this list Quarterly.  The main purpose of this list is to  determine how many players are active in each Skill level so that time slots on the calendar can be fairly slotted and balanced.

8.  Review Rating System:  Ron discussed how the rating system came into being.   Last year Ron and his committee came up with a new system using the Self Assessment Guide (on our website) and the Skill Assessment Criteria Form (see detailed handout).  This is a time consuming and somewhat complicated process involving four raters observing while filling out the assessment sheet and opinion from 'the feeders".

In 3 months the National Pickleball Association is supposed to be coming out with a Standardized Rating System.

Ron and his committee have been rating players under 4.0 while Mo has been rating players 4.0 and above.  Since May 2015, Ron has rated 80 players in 15 sessions.

Not everyone wants to be rated.  However,  those that do should take the Self Assessment Test and then contact Ron.

9.   How to Handle Walk-Ons and Non-Rated Players: The reps are to explain to players that the ratings are just for 'internal" use and to help designate court allocations.   Again, many do not want to be rated and much of the division happens naturally on the courts.

Reps are to find out who and how many want to be rated. It was also suggested that New Players are encouraged to start with a few Beginner Clinics and/or Beginner Practices in order to learn rules and scoring.

We currently need more volunteers and feeders on the Rating Committee.   There is not a current schedule now for Ratings.   Six players of similar level are needed in order to schedule a rating session.   Ron thought it best to get the list of players wanting to be rated before he set up court time.   He will reserve court time once they have a group or groups ready to be rated.

There was discussion about rating out-of-towners but nothing decided.   A suggestion was to play a round robin with the visitors.

10.   Ball Machine:  Warren has put in a request to the City of Aiken for a Ball Machine .   We are waiting for a response.

There are players who have already been rated, but think they have improved enough to "apply" for a higher rating.

Rather than go through the same current ratings assessment, why can't a player who has played regularly (or is willing to play) with the higher-rated players, be "endorsed" or recommended by say, 3 of the advanced players to move up in the ratings? This can be done anonymously, so the player does not know who did or did not make a recommendation.

This seems like a practical way to assess, and results can be kept private if the player does not advance. At the same time, the player can be told what he or she needs to do to improve to achieve the higher rating.
