Minutes from March meeting

Minutes for the Leadership Team Meeting held on March 3, 2005

Members present:  Brian Eberhard, Lori King, Heidi Abele, Marcia Stivanson, Linda Blake, Dean Cheatham, George Carr, Rich Peterson, Jean Villa, Joyce Noland, Cheryl Breidenbach and Mo Garcia.

1.   Feedback from Player Reps:

Joyce stated that Open Play would resume on Sunday afternoons at OW.  Joyce asked Rich to observe how the drop in play proceeds compared to the designated court play.

George will ask Gregg Park if hours can be extended to 11:30 instead of ending at 11.  Note:  Response back was not at this time.

Linda Blake:  Last New Players Practice was at Smith-Hazel -  Six players and they had a good practice.  The next New Players Clinic will be on March 8 at Odell.  Practice will be March 15.

2.  John Cox-Joyce.  John used to play pickleball and prior to his death a get well card was being passed around to wish him well.  We are continuing to sign this card and Mo will give it to John’s wife.

3.  Benches-Mo.   Two benches with backs and five without backs have been ordered.  It will take six weeks for them to arrive.  Mo has a plaque for Rita.  The city approved planting a tree.  There is no procedure for planting the tree but they are preparing one.  They are very specific about where and what type of tree can be planted.

Everyone agreed by vote, to the placement of Rita’s  plaque on a current bench instead of waiting for new benches.

The City has put a memorial stone along the OW walking path commemorating all individuals who have died….pickleballers, runners, tennis players, walkers, etc.   We all agreed that this might be the route to take for remembering pickleball players who have died.  There is a less chance of forgetting people this way.

Side note:  Joyce brought up that in order to remove the ads on SUG , API would have to pay $25/month.  We all agreed (by vote) that is too much money and we would not do this.

4.  Dust mop, broom, dustpan-Joyce.  Joyce stated that a member asked if we can buy our own cleaning supplies because the gym floors are dirty.  Mo stated we need to keep city/maintenance liable.  When this occurs, the front desk or Tammy needs to be notified so maintenance can handle it.  We voted  that our own cleaning supplies were not necessary.

5.  Palmetto-Joyce.  GP will allow us to use the gym for the  Saturday of the tourney dates, in case we need it for overflow.  This will be listed on the registration information for the tourney.

Mo will get a list of hotels for publishing on the registration information.

6.  SRNS-Mo.  Ethan Goudry called Mo on Fund Raiser for United Way.  This would be a one day event at the end of September.  The committee voted that this was worthy to pursue.

7.  National Pickleball month events?    We may want to get a room to eat in  instead of eating in the hallway.  There are five Tuesdays in April.  Harve will be responsible for drills.  It was asked if we could do  3 Tuesdays inside and 2 outdoors.  We decided all 5 would be indoors.  4:30-5:30 Open Play, 5:30-6:30 clinic, 6:30-7:30 Pizza.  7:30-8:30 OP.  Signups will be used for setup/cleanup/pizza ordering/drinks.

8.  Player Rating session-George.  Two are signed up.  There are 3 more weeks for sign up possibilities.

9.  New players Clinics-George.  4 are signed up

10.  Financial Update-Dean.  $17,000 balance.

Stripe Acct.-  Mo went to TopDog and proposed to lower the 10% fee.  It was 7.5% last year.  Mo asked for 5%.  If TopDog does not want to lower the fee rate, player fees can be paid directly to API’s Stripe account and then TopDog can be paid in one lump sum from our Stripe account in the future.

11.  New pickleball Lines at SH-Mo.  Lines were redone. All are extremely happy!

12.  Tree Planting program for Rita Turner - Mo…discussed above.

13.  Volunteers for 50-yr. ParkRecCenter Anniversary in June.  Volunteers will be needed.  API will be more than happy to help out where needed.  Mo stated  if they have budget over runs they may ask the community for monetary donations.

Carl Odenthal approached Mo for teaching/helping out  city employees for their wellness program.  Again, we will be happy to help out as needed for this.  Mo suggested a need to pay a slight fee to ensure commitments from participants.  All agreed.

It was suggested that perhaps we could do the Wellness Program while we hold the Groovy Tuesday clinics.  All thought this was a very  reasonable idea since volunteers would already be present.

Suggested times were:  4:15-5:15 for the City play.  5:30-6:30 clinic.   6:30-7:30 pizza.  OP after pizza.

14.  League- Mo stated that there were 228 players making up19 teams.  We are still pushing for more outdoor courts.  SH phase 3 will get new pb courts.   Generation Park will eventually get pickleball courts.   Eustis has a new court.  Along with OW transferring tennis/handball courts to pickleball courts.

We will pay the City $4/person for league play.

15.  Closing Comments:  Next Meeting Monday April 7, Room 3 at 2:30.
